Lent for kids!

Last Sunday our children and young people looked at what Lent means and why it’s important. We used some symbols - hands for praying, bread for fasting, and the cross as we look towards the Easter story - to explain the season and then created them together. Here are some of the results!

As some of you may have already experienced, Christmas has partially begun at St Mike’s with the arrival of Cards for Good Causes! This has been an annual event for many years now - supporting many great charities through the sale of Christmas cards, as well as wrapping and accessories and small gifts. Most are national charities but you will find the local charity partner of Julian House among the red boxes too!

We are very pleased to say the Advent Calendars and calendar cards, including those with biblical themes and text are back this year and as popular as ever. You can also find a small selection of advent candles with which to mark this important season.

If you want to know more about Cards for Good Causes, and the charities included you can take a look at their website HERE.

A very big thank you in advance to our wonderful volunteers who make the shop possible!

As we have in the last couple of years St. Mike’s has again partnered with a number of smaller, very local organisations. The aim is to provide an opportunity for fundraising to organisations that wouldn’t normally be able to produce the quantity required by large retailers. We also hope it helps raise awareness of the work they do!
This year we are proud to support:

Connect Bath (formerly Bath Open Christmas)
The Genesis Trust
Focus Counselling
Bath Mind

You can learn more about each one by clicking on their name above.

A huge thank you in advance to the volunteers who will be generously giving their time to make the whole thing happen!

A speaker for Harvest!

We are very pleased to announce that we will be welcoming Revd. Dr. Howard Worsley to preach at our Harvest Services on 1st October.

Howard came to faith in Christ as a child and those early experiences led him to work as a secondary school teacher, a Scripture Union worker, an Anglican vicar, a university teacher of theology, a director of education, a chaplain in the education sector, and now as a theological educator at Trinity College.

He also enjoys talking about rugby, getting out and about, whether on mountains or rivers, and travelling by motorbike.

Howard is married to Bishop Ruth (the Bishop of Taunton), has 3 sons and 5 grandchildren.

We are Recruiting!

Do you have a heart for spirit filled worship and community?

Are you passionate about leading and developing a team?

Could you be our new WORSHIP PASTOR?

St Michael’s is a vibrant and growing church in the heart of the City of Bath. We seek to share the love of God and for our building to be open for all who may come in, for us to reach out in practical work to make a difference in people lives and for the good of the city.

We are not a perfect community, we don’t always get things right, and we don’t always agree, but in all that, we still seek to follow Jesus, faithfully, because we know there is no better way.

Spirit-filled worship and prayer are at the heart of who we are. We are looking for the right person to join our leadership team and take the opportunity to develop this foundational area of church life.

The role can be between 12 and 18 hours per week depending on your circumstances, to include Sunday mornings and one evening rehearsal. Other hours to be worked flexibly according to the needs of the post.

Salary: £23.532 FTE

New Sermon Series for September

To mark the start of a new month, a new term and a new season we have a new sermon series starting Sunday 3rd September.

What is true happiness? Many have pondered this question throughout the years and have offered us definition after definition. However, because they base their ideas of happiness on human wisdom, they only provide a fleeting type of happiness: happiness that relies on self-gratification and external factors instead of internal peace.

Jesus, on the other hand, shows us a way to true lasting happiness in a series of short teachings called the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are part of the Sermon on the Mount, a sermon given by Jesus and documented by Matthew’s Gospel. The Sermon on the Mount is the most extended discourse by Jesus recorded in the Bible and is probably the most famous Sermon ever. Understanding this Sermon is foundational to understanding Jesus’ other teachings.

Good Friday at St. Mike's

We hope as many of you as possible will pop in to St. Mike’s on Good Friday afternoon/evening!

Between 1pm and 4pm you can take part in our interactive prayer trail - a multi sensory journey through the Easter Story. See, hear, touch and taste the entry to Jerusalem, the trial by Pontius Pilate, the Garden of Gethsemane and the road to The Cross.

There will be space to sit, reflect and pray.

Then at 7pm join us for an evening session of worship and prayer for Easter, led by Jacob and the worship team! This is an informal time of sung worship, readings and prayer; come as you are and be welcomed!

Palm Sunday

The 9.30 Holy communion will take place as usual…

A massive thank you!

We are so grateful to everyone who took part, bought tickets, donated and helped organise, in any way, our TearfundRaiser which took place last Friday.

The event was the brain-child of Olivia, part of our Church Family so a huge well done to her for all her hard work and for being brave enough to step outside her comfort zone and do something she had never done before!

Olivia set a target of £2000 to raise and just prior to the event it was decided that rather than going to Tearfund’s general fundraising, we would donate specifically to their appeal for those in Syria, affected by the earthquake. Their partner church in Syria sprang into action immediately after the quake and has been sheltering those made homeless as well as providing everything they can in terms of clothing, food, etc.

Amazingly we smashed the target and so far, campaign page is still open for one more day….we have raised well over £2700. We hope this makes a small difference to people who have experienced such disaster on top of already living in a country in crisis.

Make a Donation

January might be over but it still feels as though Spring is far away. What can beat those winter blues? How about a great night showcasing some local talent for you to enjoy while also knowing you’re helping to tackle poverty across the world?

We have gathered a selection of local musicians, dancers and artists, who are giving their time to perform for you in aid of Tearfund, one of St. Mike’s Mission Partners. There will be a licensed bar serving wine, beers, coffee, hot chocolate and other soft drinks, as well as snacks.

Tickets are only £10, available from St. Mike’s Cafe, or online via Eventbrite (booking fee applies)

If you would like to know more about Tearfund and their work, check out their website.

Alternatively, if you would like to make a donation - whether you come to the event or not - you can do so HERE. All donations made online will go only to Tearfund (excluding any processing fee our fundraising platform may charge). Please Gift Aid your donation if you are able!
